When you decide you want to learn to crochet, the first thought is how much is it going to cost me. You just need the basic tools and material to begin, making crocheting an inexpensive hobby to get started.
It is recommended that you start on a small project while you learn the basic steps of crocheting. You will need to choose a pattern for your project. You can choose one from a multitude of patterns for less than ten dollars, or you can get free beginners patterns online.
The crochet hook you need will depends on the size of thread or yarn you will need for your project. You can buy one crochet hook at a time or invest in a set. A set of six plastic crochet hooks will cost less than four dollars and a stainless steel set will cost about twice or three times as much. The cost of your thread or yarn will depend on the size of project. If you want to start with a larger thread, recommended for tablecloths, bedspreads, apparel and home decorative projects, a 175 yards ball of number 10 thread will cost less than two dollars each.
There are many beginning projects you can start with, that only require a ball of thread or less. The bottom line is you can get started crocheting with hooks and thread for less than ten dollars, if you are a bargain shopper. You might be able to start on less than five dollars. As you become more proficient with your skills in crochet, you can add to your collection of hooks, threads and yarn.
